Bio

I am an business technologist and Internet guru located in Mount Pleasant, SC, a suburb of Charleston South Carolina.

I have been working with computers since 1982 when my father brought home a Digital Equipment Corporation Rainbow. My first program was written that summer in BASIC and spanned a dozen 5 1/4" floppy disks. I have been involved with Internet technology since 1995, starting with a focus in the eCommerce discipline and branching out into more diverse business-centric solutions.

My latest venture, Cyber Sprocket Labs, is a consulting firm focused on providing advanced Internet technology to small and medium sized businesses. My role for clients typically focuses on business objectives and how technology will support those objectives. I translate "geek speak" into common business terms and translate business goals into actionable technical tasks, a rare skill that I have found to be invaluable to many businesses.

If you want to discuss your business needs and how I can help make your ideas a reality, please drop me a line at lance@cybersprocket.com

Some of the tools I use on a daily basis:

  • Komodo Edit - A free code editor that actually works.
  • SecureCRT - full blown commercial Secure session app (telnet/ssh). Putty is good but this interface is just a touch better.
  • Applian - various capture and editing tools for streaming multimedia.
  • Picasa - photo management desktop software & web publishing system by Google.

Objectives on resumes

99% of the objectives are mindless drivel. Who made this a "standard" in resume writing anyway?

  • To work for a Company that would provide steady hours through-out the work week. - Yeah, that's what I always wanted to do with my life, work a steady job.
  • To secure a position with a company whose mission is the pursuit of excellence. - isn't that every company or do some companies actually persue mediocrity? Maybe this person only wants to work for Ford?
  • To further enhance my skills in order to become more rounded - awesome, does that mean this person is looking for more ways to not do anything on the job and get fat?
  • utilizing my interpersonal skills - Ahhh, someone that likes to talk a lot, a wonderful objective for your career, finding something that let's you do that.
  • obtain a position in a challenging field - really? Like becoming a nuclear physicist. I never thought of a janitor position or an admin position as one people would consider challenging.
  • to help an organization to achieve important objectives - good thing, we don't want people helping us achieve unimportant objectives, especially if that if your objective.

Incorrect word usage

Yeah I do it too, but it still drives me insane.

  • Bases (a physical item, the foundation of something) versus Basis (an abstract concept)
  • Site (place or location) versus Cite (mention as an example)
