Abbreviations and Acronyms

A

  • Apple - a fruit. Also a computer company that makes computers that look good but are a bitch to upgrade or hack.

B

  • Blog - a part of your website where you tell other people what you think and assume they care. Egotistical blog owners publish updates at least 4 times daily, whereas the typical blogger is only mildly self-centered and publishes updates on a daily basis. Well balanced individuals think about starting a blog, set one up on their website and forget about it about 2 weeks later after the novelty wears off.

C

  • Community Sites - websites where people tend to share ideas, knowledge, or start flame wars. Most community sites allow anyone to share in the misery fun with now restrictions on access.
  • CPAN - Comprehensive Perl Archive Network : a collection of open source Perl modules that are reusable code that can save hours in development time by not re-inventing the wheel.
  • CSL - Cyber Sprocket Labs (of course)

I

  • Internet Community - typically refers to the tech geeks that contribute their knowledge freely and in abundance to everyone else surfing The Net. The information tends to be found on community sites through mediums such as forums, blogs, or online videos.

M

  • MVC - model,view,controller methodology of system design

N

  • Net, The - the Internet. Capitalized "N"et indicates "The Internet", versus "the internet" or "the net" which typically means your local network at your home or office.

P

  • PHP - A common programming language used to build dynamic web pages.
  • PICNIC - Problem In Chair, Not In Computer : used to describe a situation in which the user of an application is not using a program as intended.
  • Perl - A common programming language used to build dynamic web pages.

S

  • Software As A Service - web based software that is "rented" from the publisher. The software is accessed via a web browser instead of being installed on your computer. One advantage is that you always have the latest upgrades and patches. One disadvantage is your company information is kept on a bunch of computers you don't control. No worries though, Internet companies NEVER go out of business. On the flip side you ALWAYS backup your desktop computer so nothing gets lost. So many choices.
