The Name

The name Babel Monkey is based on the Babel Fish from the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy and the Infinite Monkey Theorum.

Our program, commonly referred to as a "software wedge", takes input from a serial input device (COM port) speaking some "unknown language" (preferably ASCII) and types it in at the keyboard for us. In essence translating information from an unknown language (a check reader or bardcode scanner) and rather than speaking it into your ear as the infamous Babel Fish would do, types it at the keyboard like on of so many infinite monkeys.
